I was chatting with a friend of mine today about my latest date with Yoga Boy, a soft-spoken Indian dude who has a stereotypical interest in yoga. He and I had our third date last night and at the end of the night he brought up the idea of joining me in my apartment later that evening for some post-date activities. He even mentioned that he had brought protection (smooth Yoga Boy...real smooth). I politely demured and declined his offer and we went our separate ways.
Today I was half-thinking that I should be more adventurous and not think so much, when my friend Natalie (not her real name) told me her theory. "You made the right decision. There are two types of daters: Goofus and Gallant. And you are Gallant".
Please tell me you all remember the Goofus and Gallant cartoons from the Highlights magazine. If not I'll refresh your memory: two boys are faced with the same situations and Goofus always responds in a selfish and irresponsible way, while Gallant is always kind and generous. It is designed to teach children proper social skills. So while Gallant would wait before sleeping with a guy, Goofus would jump in the sack right away (and apparently I just gave Highlights its very first Homoerotic plot).
I like the image of Goofus and Gallant on my shouler better than the angel and the devil. I feel like, in the past I have often listened to Goofus when I should have listened to Gallant. Gallant's way is the smart way.
But sometimes I think Goofus had more fun!
